Masks – A poem

I wrote this poem some years ago and never published it. Now feels like just the right time…

It’s a different kind of pain when you’re going through stuff. But you don’t want to bother anyone. And you don’t have the words. And it’s all inside.

It’s a heavy weight, a silent burden,
Lodged deep in your chest,
A storm that rages quietly,
Unseen, unfelt by those around you.

Every breath feels like a sigh,
Every heartbeat, a reminder
Of the chaos within,
The battles fought alone.

You wear a mask, a façade of normalcy,
While inside, a tempest brews,
Words tangled, emotions knotted,
A labyrinth with no clear path out.

You carry on, because you must,
Smiling when it hurts,
Nodding when you’re lost,
Hoping for a moment of release, of understanding.

Yet, in the stillness of the night,
When silence amplifies the ache,
You find only the echo of your thoughts,
A reminder of how alone you truly are.

The darkness feels like a companion,
An unyielding presence that won’t let go,
Wrapping you in its cold embrace,
As you navigate this desolate landscape.

The longing for connection remains unmet,
A distant dream fading into the abyss,
Leaving you to wander through the emptiness,
A solitary figure in a world that doesn’t understand.

You keep moving forward, because there’s no other choice,
Each step heavy, each breath a struggle,
Hoping, but not truly believing,
That one day, you might find just a flicker of inner peace.
