“Over”

Over
overwhelm.

Over
distraction
and bypassing.

Over
competing with people
whose journeys were never meant
to be compared.

Over
running uphill
when the ground beneath us
was always level.

Over
second guessing.

Over
trying to impress
the power mongers
and the gatekeepers.

Over
chasing validation
from rooms
that were never listening.

Over
clapping for others
who fall silent
when it is someone else’s turn.

Over
trying to see too far
into a future
that has not yet arrived.

Over
temporary highs.

Over
old versions of ourselves
that once served us well.

Over
paths
that were right for a season.

Over
wondering.

Over
doubting.

Over
coveting
the lives so carefully curated
behind glowing screens.

Over
the noise,
the rush,
the endless measuring.

Over it.

All of it.

And finally
the quiet understanding
that peace begins
the moment we step aside
and release
what was never ours
to control.

~ Lee Mayimele

This little thing was written at 5am on a moody-rainy JoBurg morning, with some palo santo mixed with coffee and a candle blown out wafting through the air — reminding me to be here. Right here. Right now. And so damn grateful for this season of my life.
